Service Project to Rehab Evans School
03/29/2017

Future Educators Lead Outreach to Teach Program to Benefit Evansville School

The Indiana Student Education Association (ISEA) and the Indiana State Teachers Association will host Outreach to Teach April 8 from 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. CT at Evans School, 2727 N. Evans Ave., Evansville. The annual service project rewards a deserving public school with a makeover. Volunteers from ISEA, ISTA, ISTA-Retired and community members will clean, paint, landscape and decorate the school in one weekend.

"We plan to spend our careers in the classroom," said Lyndsy Eslinger, ISEA Vice President. "It's great to get into a school and start making a difference now."

ISEA members are undergraduate and graduate college students planning to enter the education profession.

Evans School was chosen as this year's Outreach to Teach project based on factors such as need, community involvement and project feasibility. The school serves more than 500 students from pre-K to sixth grade with more than 90 percent receiving free or reduced lunch (based on 2015 - 16 data). Approximately 60 percent of certified staff in the school have five or fewer years of experience.

This project is a community celebration with state and local elected officials invited to attend.

Outreach to Teach is still seeking volunteers and donations to ensure the full project list for Evans School is completed. For more information, visit ista-in.org/o2t.
