ISTA Statement in Response to Governor’s State of the State Address
01/15/2019

ISTA President Teresa Meredith issued the following statement in reaction to Gov. Holcomb’s education proposals announced in his State of the State Address.

“It was an honor to be invited to attend tonight’s address at the invitation of Gov. Holcomb. The governor and most legislators of both parties recognize that Hoosier educators and the students they serve deserve better. Teachers are educating future business leaders, policymakers, educators, artists and more. It’s time they receive the compensation in line with the life-changing work they’re doing each day.

“Tonight, the governor reinforced his commitment to increase educator salaries and funding for public schools. I’m encouraged by his proposal to fully fund our pensions, freeing up monies that can go directly to classrooms – in addition to increasing funding by at least 2 percent each year of the biennium. However, we still have work to do to get to where we need to be. We appreciate having a seat at the table on the governor’s forthcoming commission and hope to continue meeting with him, his staff and key legislators on this critical issue. Our kids and our teachers deserve nothing less than our full commitment.”
