ISTA Statement Following GOP Legislative Priorities Announcement
01/07/2019

ISTA President Teresa Meredith attended House Speaker Brian Bosma’s roll out of the majority’s legislative priorities. Meredith released the below statement following the announcement.

“The Indiana State Teachers Association supports efforts to improve public education for all students regardless of ZIP code.

Speaker Bosma’s commitment in HB 1003 to establishing a goal to use 85 percent of a local school district’s education fund for classroom expenses, including teacher salaries, and creating a residency program in HB 1009 and career ladders in HB 1008 are a good first-step in delivering quality public education and recognizing teachers as the professionals they are.

ISTA has worked in collaboration with the governor and key legislative leaders for several months to address issues of teacher pay, funding for public schools and teacher recruitment and retention.

Indiana teacher salaries still lag salaries in surrounding states. It’s time to set a concrete goal to make teacher pay in the Hoosier state competitive with those of our neighbors. ISTA looks forward to continuing to work with legislators and the governor throughout the session on this critical issue.”
