House GOP Budget Prioritizes Private Schools Over Public School Students

In response to the House Republican budget released Thursday, ISTA President Keith Gambill issued the following statement:
“At his State of the State address last month, Gov. Holcomb told lawmakers that funding private school vouchers should not come at the expense of public schools, where 90% of students attend. Yet, the House budget released today would cut $66 million from public school students to pay for wealthier families to receive private school vouchers.
This budget also prioritizes virtual charter schools by funding them at 100%. Why, in a year of tight budgets, are we rewarding poor performance and bad behavior?
We believe in a common school system that accepts all Hoosier kids - just as Indiana's constitution calls for us to do. While a net increase in funding is positive, our public school students and educators deserve better.”
