Bill that attacks teachers’ union goes to governor
03/28/2017

Per the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board’s (IEERB) own mission statement, the board was, “established to promote a harmonious and cooperative relationship between public school teachers and the school corporations they serve.”

Unfortunately, SB 407 passed out of the House on Monday and would do the exact opposite, if signed by the governor. This places IEERB in the middle of school teachers and their own association.

Under SB 407, IEERB would be required to post training modules, videos or other instructional material informing school employees of union representation rights. IEERB would also be required to contact certain association members to educate them on how to change their association membership status.

Under the bill, IEERB would also be empowered to compile association membership information, including membership numbers, and publish the data on a website.

The bill is yet another attack on unions, and ISTA has routinely pointed out that exclusive representation information already exists on IEERB’s website

ISTA maintains if educators and legislators want to work on real issues that help students, these petty attacks must stop.

ISTA would like to thank the 38 representatives who voted no on this wrong-headed bill.
