Three Indiana Schools Receive 2017 California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grants
04/24/2017

In April 2017, Brown Intermediate Center (South Bend), Carlisle Elementary/Jr. High School and South Ripley High School (Versailles) were awarded California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grants. They were among 79 public middle and high schools in 33 states awarded a total of $83,000 to aid athletic departments affected by tight budgets.

The grant is named after California Casualty Chairman Emeritus Thomas R. Brown, an avid sportsman, who believes in helping more students learn valuable lessons of teamwork and confidence. Since the grant’s inception in 2011, more than $580,000 has been awarded to 500 schools across the nation.

“California Casualty is always looking out for our ISTA members and public schools,” said ISTA President Teresa Meredith. “Congratulations to the three Indiana schools who received the athletic grants.”

Brown Intermediate Center will use their $1,500 grant to replace decade old uniforms and purchase other equipment for the track and field team.

Carlisle Elementary/Jr. High School will apply their $1,000 to outfit the dance team with new matching uniforms and dance shoes.

The $1,000 grant will allow South Ripley High School to purchase t-shirts and cover participation fees for the Special Olympics track and field team and necessary volunteers.

“California Casualty has been supporting educators for more than 65 years, and we understand the correlation between participation in sports and higher performance in the classroom,” said California Casualty Senior Vice President Doug Goldberg. Statistics show that student-athletes have higher test scores and are much more likely to attend college.

Applications for the Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant will be accepted until Jan. 15, 2018. For more information and to apply, visit calcasathleticsgrant.com
