Teacher scholarship program to begin in 2017
04/08/2016
At a ceremonial bill signing Thursday at Plainfield High School, Gov. Pence signed into law HEA 1002. The new law establishes the Next Generation Hoosier Educator scholarship program. The scholarship aims to ease Indiana’s teacher shortage by encouraging more students to choose teaching as a career.
HEA 1002 was included in ISTA’s legislative program to promote the recruitment of teachers. ISTA President Teresa Meredith attended the bill signing.
The scholarship program will be administered by the Commission for Higher Education. Beginning in fall 2017, scholarships will be awarded to eligible applicants in an amount of $7,500 each academic year for not more than four academic years (up to $30,000 for an individual scholar recipient).
Applicants must meet academic achievement criteria and agree to teach for five years in an accredited school in Indiana. The program will be limited to 200 new applicants each academic year.
