New data shows just how much school districts lost due to private school vouchers

New data obtained from the Indiana Department of Education reveals exactly how much funding local public school districts have lost to private school vouchers in their districts.
These figures are before the caps were lifted by the legislature for the 2013-14 school year. For the 2012-13 school year, in which these numbers reflect, 9,139 students took private school vouchers at a taxpayer expense of more than $36 million.
The most current data from the Department of Education gleaned from the annual report unveiled in January shows that the number of vouchers handed out after the caps came off, and after the General Assembly expanded the eligibility criteria, increased to nearly 20,000--costing taxpayers and public schools more than $81 million.
There is little doubt that once the data for the 2013-2014 school year is available, it will show that the losses experienced by some school districts will significantly increase.
