02/23/2016

ISTA President Teresa Meredith and Sen. Donnelly Celebrate Love of Reading

INDIANAPOLIS — Feb. 23, 2016

Students in classrooms throughout Indiana will celebrate Read Across America Day on March 2. Read Across America, now in its 19th year, is a signature program of the National Education Association (NEA), which focuses on motivating children and teens to read. A public service announcement, featuring ISTA President Teresa Meredith and U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, will air prior to Read Across America Day encouraging year-long reading.

“As educators, we know that students who read or are read to do better in school,” said Meredith. “Celebrating Read Across America Day in your classrooms, schools and homes is a great start to instilling a love of reading and learning in kids.”

Read Across America Day honors Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the joy he brought to reading. NEA expects more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read. In March, Meredith plans to visit several classrooms across the state to read with students and distribute red and white stovepipe hats made famous by The Cat in the Hat.

“By celebrating reading through events like Read Across America Day, we can foster a life-long excitement for reading in our kids,” said Sen. Donnelly. “Reading to children helps grow vocabulary and communication skills that will help them in school and beyond. I am glad to join ISTA in this important effort.”
