Looking ahead after Election Day
11/10/2016

Hoosier voters made their voices heard Tuesday. The election outcomes for state races were unanticipated, but that doesn't mean we still don't have a job to do.

ISTA will stand united for our kids and educators to advocate for public education in Indiana. As educators, we don't do this job to get rich or cake walk through our careers.

As NEA South Bend local president Jason Zook said, "We do this job for the students that we see every day. The boy who comes to us with no food at home or the girl who has had to spend the night on the floor because she doesn't have a bed at home. We do this job to make their lives better."

ISTA will reach out to the new administration this week to begin discussions on the importance of public education in our state. It is my hope that Governor-elect Holcomb and Superintendent-elect McCormick will be open to discussing solutions on issues where we have common ground, as well as reviewing reform policies that are failing our kids. Public education, at full strength and with proper funding, is the backbone of our state's civic engagement, economic prosperity and future growth.

Thank you to all of our members who wrote postcards, made phone calls, knocked on doors and supported pro-public education candidates. In January, your voices and advocacy will be needed as we enter the General Assembly session. The best way to make a difference is to remain engaged and raise your voice.
