ISTA Statement on 2017 ISTEP+ Results

ISTA president Teresa Meredith released the following statement following the release of ISTEP+ scores by the Indiana Department of Education:

“Although ISTEP scores mostly remained stable, I continue to believe this test is flawed and the results in no way reflect the great work being done in public school classrooms around the state.

We remain opposed to standardized test scores being used for issues for anything other than student achievement in particular subjects. This includes the basing of teacher evaluations and school accountability grades on test scores. I encourage parents to reach out to their teacher if they really want to know how their child is doing in school.

No bubble test can measure a student’s creativity or potential, we know that our schools must focus on what helps students the most—and that means providing the conditions for one-on-one attention and instruction that truly inspire curiosity and the desire to learn.”
