Hoosier Educator of the Year recognized at Indiana Fever game
08/24/2017

ISTA Hoosier Educator of the Year Carissa Richardson-Lahrman arrived in Indianapolis for the Indiana Fever game on nothing but adrenaline. The seventh-grade math, science and engineering technology teacher at Towles New Tech in Fort Wayne had spent 14 hours in the car the day before after viewing the total eclipse in Illinois.

“I’m running on only a few hours of sleep, but I didn’t want to miss this honor” said Richardson-Lahrman.

ISTA President Teresa Meredith chose to recognize Richardson-Lahrman during a recent Indiana Fever game. Richardson-Lahrman was named the ISTA Hoosier Educator of the Year at the ISTA Representative Assembly, and her accomplishments fit well with the Fever’s theme of “Inspiring Women” for the game.

“Carissa is a great example of an educator who does it all,” said Meredith. “She’s involved in the community, leads extra-curricular activities and continues to improve her teaching practice through her pursuit of National Board Certification.”

Meredith presented Richardson-Lahrman with a plaque on center court. The two also had the opportunity to act as honorary captains for the game against the New York Liberty. They joined the team captains and referees on court for the coin toss.

“It was an unexpected honor,” said Richardson-Lahrman, “one I’m not likely to forget.”

ISTA has partnered with the Indiana Fever this season on the Read Like a Pro program. ISTA and the Fever have hosted numerous reading events throughout the summer to promote childhood literacy.

“Thank you to the Fever for the opportunity to recognize an inspiring educator,” said Meredith.
