Dual credit teachers granted more time to meet new requirements
12/20/2016

An organization responsible for regional accreditation of dual credit teachers has announced that Indiana dual credit teachers have an additional five years to meet new requirements.

In the summer of 2015, dual credit teachers around Indiana were surprised to learn their accreditation was at risk after the Higher Learning Commission instituted additional requirements that high school instructors teaching dual credit courses must meet, which included specifically, a master's degree and 18-credit hours in the subject area they teach.

Upon learning of these new requirements, the Dual Credit Advisory Council was activated and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) was tasked with applying for the extension. The council is co-chaired by Teresa Lubbers, executive director of CHE and State Superintendent Glenda Ritz.

ISTA Director of Governmental Relations & Public Affairs Gail Zeheralis was appointed to the council shortly after the issue of dual credit teacher qualifications arose.

ISTA applauds the work of all who were involved in helping to gain this accommodation.
