Connecting the dots: Curriculum development and the practice of teaching
01/30/2017

ISTA members engage with a variety of professional associations and organizations, including ISTA, that advance teaching and subject area knowledge, which enhance the learning experience for Hoosier students. ISTA member and Hamilton Southeastern Education Association representative, Dr. Chris Edwards is a published member of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS).

Edwards finds value in his NCSS membership. His involvement started as a member, but grew within NCSS and other organizations, when he began to submit articles and papers to peer-reviewed publications. This was the beginning of his journey to advocating for teacher-generated curriculum.

Edwards works to promote, “the idea that teachers can merge methodology with learning and teaching practices. Let’s use what’s effective in the classroom.”

He believes that ISTA members are innovative. ISTA educator involvement in curriculum development can demonstrate professional expertise and gain positive attention for the profession overall – from parents to legislators.

As an outcome of his commitment to teacher-generated curriculum, he authored the five-volume series “Connecting the Dots in World History: A Teacher’s Literacy Based Curriculum.”

Edwards is hosting a webinar through NCSS to inspire other educators to develop personalized classroom-ready curricula to meet literacy standards, while emphasizing key historical content from the text.

If you’re interested in hearing more from Edwards on teacher-generated curriculum, how he approached this work and how to develop curriculum for the classroom, consider attending his webinar to learn more.
