ISTA Statement on Teacher Evaluations During COVID-19
04/07/2020

ISTA President Keith Gambill released a statement after State Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCormick confirmed that teacher evaluations are scheduled to continue as planned, even as teachers and students adjust to online or remote learning.

"The focus now should be on students, rather than on creating portfolios of work, scheduling online observations and measuring teacher adherence to goals and standards. Given that nearly a third of the teaching year has been disrupted, it’s hard to imagine how any annual review process would be meaningful to anyone or serve as a fair basis for high-stakes decisions.

Under these circumstances the best course of action is to waive this year’s teacher evaluation requirements and deem all teachers as effective for purposes of pay adjustments and Teacher Appreciation Grants. Teacher improvement plans could be temporarily tabled and resume once teachers return to regular classroom work in the fall."
