ISTA Statement on Senate Education Committee Amendment
04/10/2019

ISTA President Teresa Meredith issued a statement following passage of amendment in Senate Education Committee.

“The amendment today on HB 1253 demonstrates the level to which some Indiana lawmakers have become disconnected from what Hoosiers believe to be appropriate active shooter training for teachers and school employees,” said Meredith. “The amendment, which was made public during the committee hearing, specifically permits firing projectiles at school employees during an active shooter training with school employee consent.”

“Passage of this amendment follows an incident in January where teachers at Meadowlawn Elementary School were injured when an airsoft gun was used during an active shooter training, and the teachers were told not to tell the next group of teachers participating in the drill about the projectiles. This is an unacceptable practice, and ISTA will work to prohibit active shooter trainings from physically endangering school employees.”
