ISTA Statement on Betsy DeVos Visit to Indiana
09/14/2017

ISTA President Teresa Meredith released the following statement leading up to U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ visit to Indiana:

“Secretary DeVos is back, yet again, to check on the work she has done in Indiana to privatize Hoosier public schools. The $1.3 million her PAC has given to special interest groups and candidates over the years has resulted in more unaccountable charter schools and private school vouchers.

DeVos has held up Indiana’s failed experiments as a model for the nation, even though the results are clear that these experiments have failed kids, harmed communities and grown even more unpopular.

As the Trump-DeVos administration disparages our great public schools, Americans continue to express strong support for traditional public schools and disapprove of private school vouchers. A recent poll found 61 percent oppose public dollars being spent to send students to private schools.

It’s time for our elected officials to listen to parents and educators and support our neighborhood public schools, where ALL students are served.”
